Deadly Distractions

Connection Speed: Low | Medium | High
As of July 15, 2010 it is illegal to use cell phones while driving in Manitoba.

This episode of The Safety Factor was inspired while dropping my husband off at his office one morning. A person getting off the bus walked across the parking lot right in front of our car while texting. Our car was still moving yet this person walked right in front of us without looking. Thankfully we saw this person first and came to a stop before there was a serious accident.

So I decided to look around.

And I saw a lot. Every scenario in this episode is an actual example of what I saw over the course of a week…

  • A person with a headset on not hearing a car honking at them
  • An elderly gentleman driving a scooter all over the sidewalk because he was talking on a cell phone!
  • A girl on rollerblades talking on a cell phone skating right in front of a car. She didn’t stop at the intersection and nearly caused a 2 car collision.

Driving while talking or texting on a cell phone is not only illegal as of July 15 2010, it is a clear danger to other drivers and yourself.

Are you about to cause an accident?

Or be in one yourself?

Enjoy being outside but be careful – look up and listen!

Be aware of your surroundings!
